Why Do Good and Intelligent People Support Trump?
This is the million-dollar question many people including myself repeatedly ask. I can understand why the following groups of people support Trump: racists, law breakers, people who do not care about their country and the extremely wealthy whose primary concern in life is money. But good and intelligent people? I don’t get it but human behavior in many instances can be hard to understand.
While there are likely other reasons not listed, below are a few of my speculations as to why good people support Trump:
1. They are not well informed on Trump. Either they have not taken the time to do this or they have received their information from one primary news source like Fox News - a highly biased news source that has been successfully sued for almost a billion dollars from spreading false information. See https://apnews.com/article/fox-news-dominion-lawsuit-trial-trump-2020-0ac71f75acfacc52ea80b3e747fb0afe. While getting well informed on the candidates and the issues is not an easy task, it is none-the-less a necessary task for the responsible voter.
2. They have allowed themselves to be deceived.
3. Their intense anger or hatred for the left has clouded their judgement.
4. They have blindly fallen in line with various national leaders (e.g. Rev. Franklin Graham) who have themselves fallen victim to Trump. Such people have not done enough of their own research and have not questioned the positions of these leaders they have learned to trust because of the excellent work in their area of expertise like Samaritan's Purse in the case of Franklin Graham.
5. They have a god-like perception of Trump. He can do no wrong and his actions and words cannot and will not be questioned.
6. They are not seeking truth. They do not look at facts objectively and or draw logical conclusions from the facts. They believe what they want to believe and they use whatever information they can find to support their belief. In the bible people Christians are commanded to seek truth and when they diligently seek after truth with integrity they will find it.
I have close friends and family members who are either Trump leaning or Trump supporters. I love them and will continue to love them. I hope they do the same for me.
While I prefer not to say this so bluntly, in this very unique election there is a right choice and a wrong choice. Unlike other presidential elections in modern times, we do not have two somewhat reasonable candidates. We have one reasonable candidate in Harris and one highly unreasonable candidate in Trump.
But people make mistakes. To error is human. Lord knows, I have made plenty of mistakes myself – some minor and some not so minor. I see voting for Trump in the not so minor category of mistake making. If he wins this will eventually come to hurt not only the Trump supporter but all of us. This hurt will be major and maybe even irreversible.
